LOCATION
Sipan (South Dalmatia, Croatia) is an island located in Croatian region South Dalmatia. It is 9 km long and 2-3 km wide with area of 16 km2. It is the largest of Elafitski islands (group of islands in South Dalmatia). There are two settlements on island Sipan: Sipanska Luka and Sudurad.
Sipanska Luka (Sipan`s Port) is located on west side of island Sipan and it has around 300 inhabitants. Sudurad is located on south-west side of island Sipan and it has around 250 inhabitants.
Those two settlements are connected with a road around 5 km long. On most part of island Sipan is Sipan`s field, rich and fertile ground. It is surrounded with two limestone cliffs.
HISTORY
Island Sipan was first time mentioned in 1st century. Name Sipan was first time used in 1371. Island is rich with small churches dating from Middle Ages. Many remains testify that it was inhabitated during the Ilirs and during the Roman domination. It`s history is close connected with Dubrovnik`s.
It was very developed in time of Dubrovnik`s Republic, but after the earthquake in 17th century, it lost its economy importance. Inhabitants have been directed to agriculture, olive and vine growing.
